  • These movies are all about fight scenes, car chases and non-stop action between the main character and supporting characters.  Examples: 'Transporter', 'Transformers'

  • These movies feature a lot of action and a fast-paced adventurous theme.  Examples: 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'Into the Wild'
Animation
  • These movies are either the old-fashioned form of animation, digital animation, cartoons or even Aneme (typically considered Asian or Japanese animation).  Examples: 'Sleeping Beauty (Disney)', 'Shrek (Dreamworks)', Manga

  • If the movie typically makes people laugh, especially out loud, then it is considered a comedy.  It can be a dark or light type of comedic theme.  Often the main characters are comedians or people caught in funny positions.  Some movies labeled this way are not overtly comedic, but contain elements that are meant to be humorous.   Examples:  'Bridesmaids', 'Ferris Bueler's Day Off', 'The Hangover'

  • Movies tagged as crime movies are ones which feature true crime stories, documentary-type crime scenes, or a theme based on characters who fight against or commit crimes.  Examples: 'Rampart', 'The Italian Job', 'Gacy'

  • Dramatic movies are typically movies in which the main and supporting characters experience dramatic life events.  Often dramas are combined with other genres for entertainment value, but can be solely based on human emotions that viewers can relate to.   Examples: 'War Horse', 'The Iron Lady', 'The Notebook'

  • These movies are aimed at specific audiences; families.  They can be animated or not.  Often the themes involve elements of family life or children.  These movies are generally labeled as such because they are either rated 'G' or 'PG' by the MPAA and/or meant to be viewed by families (with questionable material removed or muted).  Examples: 'Where the Red Fern Grows', 'Madagascar', 'Fireproof'
  • On our site, horror movies may contain scenes of violence, intensity or even things that may scare the viewer.  We also include under this genre 'slasher' movies, 'monster' movies or films that involve a high level of intensity or gore that is often shown to frighten the viewer.  Paranormal activities are often included as well.  Examples: 'Halloween', 'Nightmare on Elm Street', 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'

  • Mystery movies may be dramas or even horror movies, but the main element is that the film features an element to it where the viewer is kept in the dark, metaphorically, in order to surprise them or create elements of the unknown.  Examples: 'Hide and Seek', 'Sherlock Holmes'
Romance
  • Life is about love (in many cases), and romance movies are full of love themes.  Some can be funny, sad or touching.  Romance movies touch us in ways that remind us of the love in life.  Examples:  'Dear John', 'The Way We Were'

  • Short for science fiction, these movies typically feature events that may happen on Earth or another world, either in the future or past.  Scientific terms are often used, as are themes.  If it isn't easily explained using science, these films often deal with the paranormal or unexplained (like UFOs).  Examples: 'Star Trek', 'Star Wars', 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe', 'Push'
  • Like a mystery, a suspense film is usually categorized as such because it involves the unknown.  Suspense films often include thematic elements that cross other genres.  Highly intense scenes are often involved in suspense movies.  Examples: 'Faces in the Crowd', 'Super 8'
  • The goal of a thriller is to give you a virtual roller-coaster ride emotionally.  Sometimes these movies can be intensely scary or even show violence, terror or other emotional themes that are meant to explain action, adventure scenes or elements that are exciting.  Examples:  'Passengers', '2012', 'Whiteout'
Remember, many movies cross genres, and we will tag them as such in our reviews.  This is merely a guide to help you identify what may or may not be included in the film.
