'Prometheus' (2012)

Building on its international frenzy, Fox's 'Prometheus' debuted at $3.561 million in midnight screenings at nearly 1400 locations.  Those numbers include over $1 million from 294 IMAX theaters.

The film had already gained $51 million in revenues from overseas venues when it opened last weekend.

Our preview:
A lot of people are going to assume that this movie is the 1979 'Alien' --- but it is more.  Ridley Scott confirmed in an interview with Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode (Friday June 1, 2012) on BBC radio 5 live that the location is completely different.  Alien is set on LV-426, Archeron source.  Like 'Alien', the movie is about space exploration, our human curiosity and questions about whether we are alone in the Universe.  Scott, who directed 'Alien' certainly has an affection for the idea that life does exist elsewhere, although it bothered us that even Scott appears to be of the mind that any alien life would be harmful to humanity.  We are sort of attached to 'ET'...but let's not digress.

Our review (trying not to add any spoilers):
We loved the entire 'Alien' series (except for Winona Rider), so we were excited about 'Prometheus' as well.  We'd watched the prequel and were hyped for the film. Cinematically, this film is beautifully done.  We love the special effects and the extreme amount of work set builders and CGI artists must have put into this film.  So, yeah - on the eyes - FANTASTIC!

Charlize Theron's character is possibly the best in addition to Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender.  They have believable characters and their acting skills will be appreciated.  We enjoyed the vulnerability of several characters because we were expecting to have hard-core characters like 'Alien' pretty much fill the entire movie.  No cigarette-smoking Sigourney Weaver here.
The one area we were a bit disappointed in was the plot.  Typical to Hollywood, any time someone is a 'scientist', they have uncanny abilities that even Einstein would be amazed by.  We didn't feel the true horror of 'Alien', but then again, that was 1979, and it was easier to scare us then.  Intelligent people may feel like they are being talked down to, because a lot of the scientific jargon is a bit like a high school biology class.  We liked the action scenes and the fact that there were several times when we were surprised.

Scott seems to be working on a running theme, and we expect that this movie will be added to a franchise experience.  Don't go in to the film expecting all the answers.  Scott doesn't give them to you.  He wants you to use your imagination, but at times it seems he wants you to see things as he does.

Rated R for sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language

Family Guide:   Like many 'space' movies, the characters wear outfits that suggest that traveling in a spaceship is hot and difficult to move about in with a lot of bulky clothes.  That being said, seeing a woman in a bikini top, some cleavage, men in only towels and brief exchanges of kissing and an implied sexual experience between a man and woman limit the sex and nudity in the film. The level of gore is mostly limited to what happens when humans and other life forms interact - and it is messy in a large part of the film.  Violent images are prevalent throughout the film and include physical attacks, burning, explosions, infection, death and disfigurement.  For an 'R' rated movie, the language has been kept to brief expressions that are often cut off so that you do not hear a full exclamation.  Smoking, drugs and drinking are very limited and not a major part of set dressing.  As for frightening or disturbing scenes - we would definitely NOT recommend this to anyone under the MPAA's rating of 17-year-olds, and even then we'd suggest they not attend in a group of teens unless they are very mature.

  1. Great description of this movie. After viewing the Official Movie Trailer it does look more interesting as to what is happening around them and aboard their craft. I may be more inclined to watch it now more than previously thought. I do like a lot of unexpected things that happen and enjoy the surprises that take place a long with action movies. Guess I will have to go see this one after all. Thanks for sharing this movie with us.
